Pianist Addison Frei, a native of Lawrence, Kansas, has established a strong reputation among musicians and audiences alike. He was recognized as a 2013 Yamaha Young Performing Artist and member of Betty Carters Jazz Ahead, a two-week residency program held at the Kennedy Center under the direction of Jason Moran. Frei is also a two-time recipient of the Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award sponsored by ASCAP. He was awarded first prize in the 2012 Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition and was noted as the youngest competitor. Earlier that year, he was a finalist in the Phillips Jazz Piano Competition in Pensacola, Florida. The University of North Texas graduate can be heard on the six-time Grammy® nominated One O'Clock Lab Bands 2013 release. The faculty at North Texas recognized Frei as the Outstanding Undergraduate Jazz Studies Student for 2013.
Addison has accompanied vocalists and instrumentalists in diverse settings ranging from pops symphony dates with groups like The Texas Tenors, classical vocal competitions, musical theatre productions such as Annie Get Your Gun and Thoroughly Modern Millie, commercial session work in Dallas and Los Angeles, and countless performances backing the leading jazz artists of today.
