Adrian Sutcliffe studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he was awarded the Frances Earle Scholarship for piano playing as well as being a prizewinner in many solo piano competitions, having originally studied piano in Chester under John Gough and violin under Nicholas Wood, co-leader of the R.L.P.O. As a joint first study pianist and violinist he left the Academy in 1987 having gained his Professional Certificate, Certificate of Advanced Studies and LRAM.
He has always been particularly in demand as an accompanist, playing for many recitals, auditions and exams throughout the UK and covering the full range of singers, strings, woodwind and brass instruments.
Adrian has performed as a soloist and chamber musician at most major venues throughout the UK ranging from St Johns Smith Square, the Royal Albert Hall and the South Bank to the Birmingham Hippodrome, St. Davids Hall and the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall. He has also performed widely outside the UK from Eastern Europe to New Zealand.
He was director and pianist for the contemporary music ensemble, Terra Nova, who twice staged a national competition for young composers, working in collaboration with composers Paul Patterson and Jonathan Harvey. He also directed and repetiteured for the ensembles production of Brittens The Turn of the Screw at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London. Subsequently he was pianist for the ensemble Music on Offa which toured festivals around the UK and were involved in a major mixed media project sponsored by the British Arts Council. He now plays regularly with the unique flute piano and percussion trio Classic Rhythm which has performed at over 200 music societies, festivals, theatres and arts centres throughout UK. The group has released 3 CDs and has broadcast live on UK national radio and appeared on BBC2.
As a repetiteur his experience ranges from operas such as The Knot Garden and The Turn of the Screw to shows such as My Fair Lady. He has always worked extensively as both a vocal and instrumental accompanist, playing regularly for recitals and auditions. His regular work with dancers has included playing for Birmingham Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, the Matthew Bourne Company and the Royal Ballet in London, with whom he has recently performed at the Opera House in the productions Timecode, The Wind in the Willows and Kurt Weills Magical Night as well as in Stravinskys Firebird. His versatility in sight-reading and improvising has also led him to play for the Genée International Ballet Awards as well as in West End shows such as The Lion King.
As a composer and arranger, Adrians pieces have been performed at Sadlers Wells and at West End theatres and many other venues as well as on BBC radio. He is also the regular arranger for Classic Rhythm, his works having included several childrens productions, which have toured extensively around schools in England.
Adrian also examines Grades and Diplomas for the ABRSM, for whom he has toured China, the U.S.A., Cyprus, Turkey, Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, India, Oman, U.A.E., Brunei, Bermuda and Thailand. He is also a trainer of new examiners for the Board.
