Additional Info:
Ben Socrates first took up the piano at the age of 11, with an eclectic approach to musical development that would encompass classical repertoire, improvisation and composition. He began studying with pianist/composer Adam Swayne at the University of Chichester in 2007. Having largely abandoned classical music, Ben soon discovered a new affinity for it, and developed an exciting and diverse repertoire. By April 2009 he had achieved ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction - he then went on to win two prestigious prizes - the first Clifford Benson Piano Competition and the Funtington Music Robert Headley Award, with a compelling programme of Bach, Debussy, and Rachmaninoff. In his three years at Chichester, Ben has performed acclaimed recitals at the University's Chapel of the Ascension, Chichester Cathedral, Bognor Regis Music Club, Pallant House Gallery and Leconfield Hall, Petsworth. He continues to pursue his other musical interests, including composing in several mediums and writing for and playing piano in Mulatones - a six piece world music/electronica ensemble. In May this year, Ben made his debut as an orchestral soloist, performing the Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 2 with the University of Chichester Chamber Orchestra.
As an accompinist, Ben is experienced and acclaimed, having worked with award winning flautist Jasmine Selby, violinist Rachel Cooper and with several jazz ensembles and vocalists.
