David Townhill - Grade 8+ professional pianist for over 20 years.

I grew up in a musical family and became a concerto standard pianist and second study violin/viola by the time I left school at Fettes College, Edinburgh. I continued my musical journey alongside studying Classics at St John's College, Cambridge. My tastes diverged and I began dabbling in the dark arts of pop, rock and musical theatre. This journey has taken me from the Edinburgh Festival to Glasgow's King's theatre; from Princes Street Gardens to the Cambridge May Balls; from the Kelburn Garden Party to Doune the Rabbit Hole and beyond! I've enjoyed creative partnerships with original bands Lipsync for a Lullaby, My Next Girlfriend, Mantra and The Tinderbox Orchestra, covers with The Rear View Band, rehearsed and performed all over Scotland in musicals, operas and pantomimes, and have an extensive classical performance history including: Rhapsody in Blue, Grieg's piano concerto and Finzi's Eclogue as soloist; requiems by Faure and Brahms, the St John Passion and The Messiah as repetiteur for Dunbar Choral Society. I am now also a church organist at Holy Cross, Davidson's Mains, Edinburgh. As a result I have excellent sight reading skills, wide experience of styles and can accompany sensitively to the needs of any performer.

I regularly play piano for solo performers, for example, with a solo vocalist when working for the charity Music in Hospitals performing war time classics and popular songs from across the eras.

I have been repetiteur and keys player for Stow College Glasgow, the University of the West of Scotland, Dunbar Lyric and various Edinburgh Fringe Festival groups. Shows include West Side Story, 42nd Street, the Witches of Eastwick, Little Shop of Horrors, Evita, The Sound of Music, Oliver! and various Gilbert and Sullivan.

In addition to piano I am an accomplished violinist and play chamber music every year at events such as the Public Sector awards at the Scottish Parliament.

I privately teach piano, violin and viola. I compose and arrange music, play for weddings and other special occasions and get involved in innovative Edinburgh musical projects including the Tinderbox Project, Decagram, Mantra and shows at Summerhall.
