Samuel began his musical journey at the age of four with Yamaha Junior Music Course and completed Yamaha Electone Grade 6 at the age of ten. In 2001, Samuel obtained a Distinction in Theory Grade 8 from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and received the Hedy King Robinson Award. Samuel completed his Bachelor of Performing Arts (Music) in University of Malaya (Malaysia) with First Class Honours in 2009, under the tutelage of Miss Geneviene Wong Jen-Pei. Following that, he obtained a Distinction in the Licentiate Diploma of Trinity College London (LTCL) in Piano Recital. In June 2010, Samuel has just completed his Master of Music in Piano Accompaniment at Birmingham Conservatoire with Distinction. After that, he has also been awarded a scholarship to the Advanced Postgraduate Diploma in Piano Performance. At the conservatoire, Samuel studies with professors Malcolm Wilson, John Humphreys, and Simon Nicholls. Samuel also performed in master classes conducted by famous pianists such as Louis Lortie, Steven Osborne, Peter Donohoe, Mikhail Kazekevich, Andrew Ball, and Martin Jones.
Samuel was awarded the Yamaha Asian Music Scholarship in 2008. He was also the Champion in the Solo Classical Piano Category of the Roland Piano Festival Competition in 2009. As a member of the Dithyrambic Singers (Kuala Lumpur), he has performed in numerous international choir competitions and festivals in Indonesia, China, Korea, and Singapore both as a singer and accompanist. While studying at the Conservatoire, Samuel won the first prize in the Delia Hall Accompanist Prize for Pianists as well as John Ireland Piano and Chamber Prize. Besides, he was also the finalist in Birmingham Conservatoire Piano Prize, Reginald Vincent Lieder Prize and Gordon Clinton English Song Prize.
