Shah Johan obtained a Bachelor of Music (Hons.) degree from UCSI University in 2009 where he studied piano performance with Jaz Tan Siaw Pei and Professor Dr. Png Tean Hwa while pursuing his vocal studies with Ian Lim Kean Seng. Shah Johan won a bronze medal in the 3rd ASEAN International Chopin Piano Competition in November 2008 and was a finalist in the 2007 Roland Piano Festival. He scored a distinction in his LTCL Recital exam in Piano, and in December 2009 he obtained his FTCL diploma in Piano Performance. Shah Johan has performed in numerous masterclasses conducted by Ilya Yakushev (Russia), Dr. Kang Juyeon (Korea), Ng Chong Lim (Malaysia), Peter Donohoe (United Kingdom) and also Dr. Roy Howat (United Kingdom), a former student of Vlado Perlemuter.
As a soloist, Shah Johan has been featured in numerous concerts in Kuala Lumpur such as the 1st Asia Grand Piano Concert in 2009 and Celebrating Chopin Concert in 2010. He also performed before the Crown Prince of Norway in a state dinner hosted by the Norwegian Embassy. Being an active piano accompanist, Shah Johan performed many vocal recitals and accompanies the Dithyrambic Singers at major choral festivals and competitions throughout the globe. In 2011, Shah Johan completed his Masters in Music at the Birmingham Conservatoire with distinction. Alongside that, he championed several competitions in 2011, the Delia Hall Accompaniment Prize, Edward Brooks Song Prize for Pianist, Gordon Clinton Prize for English Song, Ambache Prize for Women Composers and Ashleyan Opera Prize as a vocal accompanist and was awarded a junior fellowship by the conservatoire.
Being a versatile musician, Shah Johan performed everywhere around the world. In 2008, he was invited to perform choral pieces in Victoria Hall, Singapore. A year later at the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra with organist Felix Hell, and Carnagie Hall with choral composer Eric Whitacre in the United States. Here in the UK, he accompanied the Maggie Teyte Prize that was being held in the Royal Opera House and also performed in Symphony Hall Equinox concert last March. Understanding that vocal accompaniment was a huge part of his career interests, Shah Johan later involved himself into répétiteur, which he is now currently working with Welsh National Opera.
