Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Stephen Karr is a young conductor and keyboardist establishing himself as a gifted interpreter of a wide variety of orchestral and operatic works.
In the 2010-11 season, Stephen co-founded Pacific Opera Project, for which he serves as music director, led and accompanied the highly successful first production of Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti and conducts Don Giovanni this fall. He continued his long association with Opera UCLA as assistant conductor and continuo harpsichordist for their fall production of Handel's Agrippina, led by noted lutenist and conductor Stephen Stubbs. he also joined the music staff at Palm Beach Opera for productions of Glück's Orfeo and Mozart's Così fan tutte and served as a pianist and assistant conductor this summer for The Consul at Opera New Jersey in Princeton.
A Cultural Envoy from the United States Department of State, Stephen made his European debut in September 2009, leading the Rotterdam Youth Symphony and the brass ensemble from Rotterdams CODARTS conservatory of music in a program for the city's annual World Harbor Days festival.
Also during the 2009-10 season, Stephen conducted the world premiere production of Kenneth Wellss The First Lady, an opera based on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt in the weeks following Franklin Roosevelts death. He was also the music director for Con Man, a new musical theater piece by composer Benjamin Boone, sponsored by the Visions and Voices series at the University of Southern California. He assisted Maestro Stubbs in Il Giasone by Francesco Cavalli, the west coast premiere of that work by Opera UCLA. Other highlights include a performance as continuo harpsichordist for Le quattro stagioni with Sarah Chang and the American Youth Symphony; coaching the west coast premiere of Jonathan Dove's Flight with Opera UCLA; and working as a guest coach and accompanist for the young artist program at Opera Santa Barbara.
Stephen's schooling includes degrees in organ performance from Westminster Choir College and Mercer University, as well as a master's degree in orchestral conducting from UCLA, where he studied with Neal Stulberg and led a wide variety of repertoire, including performances of John Adams's Chamber Symphony, Beethoven's sixth symphony and Verdi's Falstaff, in addition to a performance of Le nozze di Figaro, led from the fortepiano as conductor and recitative accompanist.
