I have thirty years' experience as a piano accompanist, répétiteur and repertoire coach for singers and instrumentalists. I have played a good deal of repertoire from years of ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall exam syllabuses for voice, strings, woodwind and brass from Grades 1 to 8. I have also accompanied many diploma examinations for a wide range of soloists, and played for music festivals, BBC Young Musician heats, and other competitions.
I work with musicians of all ages and abilities, from professional artists with Waterperry Opera and City Music Foundation to students preparing for A-Levels and GCSEs. I have also accompanied many choirs and choral societies, including Lincoln Choral Society, Nottingham Bach Choir, Leicester University Chamber Choir, the UK Japan Choir, Leicester Cathedral Choir, Christ's Voices (Cambridge), and the Leicester Philharmonic Choir.
As a singer myself, I have a deep understanding of the subtle dynamics at play between soloist and accompanist. A good accompanist is much more than someone who just plays the piano, and knows that any successful musical relationship requires sensitivity, intuition, trust, cooperation, generosity, patience, and a sense of humour.
I am a confident sight-reader and can prepare most accompaniments within a day or two. More advanced repertoire (diploma standard and beyond) can take a little longer to learn, but can usually be prepared with a few weeks' notice. In most cases I charge £50 per hour pro rata for rehearsals and examinations. Performance rates are available on request.
